Anti Doping Prohibited List 2024:
Prohibited List and Tramadol Ban
You may have recently seen that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has published the 2024 Prohibited List and a summary of key changes, found here.
A key change this year is that from 1 January 2024, tramadol will be prohibited in-competition. Any athlete found to be using tramadol in-competition faces the prospect of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation and a ban from sport. UKAD has released some initial information around tramadol which can be found here.
As part of the Assurance Framework (requirement 17a), all NGBs are required to advise Athletes and Athlete Support Personnel on the performance pathway of the changes to the Prohibited List. This is particularly important this year given the addition of tramadol and its known use for pain relief in the UK
As well as elite-level Athletes, it is also important to reach Athletes who fall outside of your elite programme or the top tiers of your professional leagues, as these individuals may not have access to anti-doping information and support via their support personnel.
UKAD has produced a new resource to assist your NGB in communicating this information directly to relevant Athletes and Athlete Support Personnel and spreading awareness more generally with participants in your sport.

UKAD will be publishing TUE guidance for Athletes and Athlete Support Personnel on how to comply with the 2024 tramadol regulations in the coming weeks. This will include i. the timeframes for when an Athlete needs to apply for a TUE for the use of tramadol; and ii. important factors to consider when making such an application.

World Anti-Doping Code Review
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has recently started the review of the 2027 edition of the World Anti-Doping Code and International Standards. WADA has sought to limit the scope of the 2027 Code Review process. Therefore, feedback is being requested on certain key concepts that have been identified as requiring consideration for update. These have been organised into different ‘Concept Papers’, which can be found here. If you have any feedback for WADA, please complete the Stakeholder Comments Form found here and return to code.review@ukad.org.uk. We would welcome your comments by no later than 3 December 2023 to allow time for UKAD to compile these and return to WADA.
